NCQLP Announces Examination Results - 2007 Examination

C. Charles Occhino, LC (Aetna Corporation), NCQLP President, is pleased to announce that 248 lighting practitioners sat for the 2007 Examination. With a pass rate of 78.5%, the number of Lighting Certified individuals has been increased by 190.

Those who became LCs in 2007 brought the total number of LCs to 1753, including 9 Intern LCs who were successful candidates. There are now a total of 39 Intern LCs. Since the Lighting Intern Program began in 2000, 27 Intern LCs have become full LCs.

Intern LCs

This year, 10 lighting students sat for the Examination as participants in the NCQLP Intern LC Program. Students from an accredited college offering a minimum of 12 credit hours in lighting or lighting related courses within one year of graduation can apply to take the LC Examination as an Intern Student. Two (2) students from the University of Nebraska; six (6) students at Penn State, and two (2 ) students attending the Parsons School of Design, sat for the LC Examination; nine (9) of those were successful candidates and have now earned their designation as Intern LCs.

Statistics about New LCs

Of those who successfully completed the 2007 Examination, 17% identify themselves as electrical engineers and 26% as lighting designers/consultants. Other candidates included 13% manufacturers’ representatives and 14% sales representatives.

Approximately 34% list experience levels at 6-10 years, with another 39% indicating that they have 11-20 years of experience.

An average of 53% of the new LCs hold bachelor degrees, while 13% indicate that they have earned advanced degrees.

IESNA members account for 44% of new LCs, with an average of 60% being IESNA members since the Examination was first offered in 1998. In 2007, 3% indicated that they belong to the IALD, with IALD averaging 10% of successful LC candidates over the decade during which the Examination has been offered. Of those taking the Examination, 8% hold the designation, Professional Engineer (PE).

The National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions is a non-profit corporation founded in 1991 to serve and protect the well-being of the public through effective and efficient lighting practice. Through a peer review process, the NCQLP establishes the experience and examination requirements for certification in the lighting industry.
