Electrical Products Manufacturing Careers
Electric lighting uses significant numbers of electrical and electronic parts and supplies. In addition to lamps (“light bulbs”), there are a number of devices and components within lighting that include ballasts, sockets, wiring and controls used in lighting and lighting control systems.
This sector of the lighting industry employs engineers and scientists. Degrees in physics, chemistry, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and other technical fields are essential training for this work. Many important innovations begin in laboratories of lamp and controls companies, and are tested until the best products can be put into production. It is not uncommon for staff scientists to hold a PhD or other advanced degree.
But there are also many of other jobs in the manufacturing, sales and distribution of lamps, sockets, ballasts, dimmers and other electrical components. There is also a rapidly increasing need for all manufacturers to have a better understanding of lighting systems and applications. In addition to technical product personnel, persons with a broader interest in the field are working in component manufacturing.
Educational Requirements: Generally, a college degree in a major technical area or in business. Masters and PhD level degrees are needed for R&D positions, but BA, BS and BBA degrees are often adequate for general employment.
